Acoustic vs Ultrasonic Leak Detection: What's the Difference?

Understanding the difference between acoustic and ultrasonic detection methods.

Both use sound, but at different frequencies and for different applications.

Acoustic detection

Audible frequency range (20-4000Hz). Detects water escaping from pressurized pipes. Uses correlators and ground microphones. Best for water mains, service lines, and slab leaks.

Ultrasonic detection

High-frequency range (above 20kHz). Detects compressed air, steam, and gas leaks. Uses ultrasonic translators that convert high-frequency sounds to audible range. Best for industrial compressed air and steam systems.

Which one do you need?

If you have a pressurized water leak: acoustic correlation. If you have compressed air, steam, or gas: ultrasonic. For comprehensive industrial surveys, we use both.
